Cancer Rehabilitation

Cancer Rehabilitation

As you or a loved one recover from cancer or cancer-related treatment, many physical changes take place. Our specially trained therapists can teach you how to take control of your physical recovery to help combat the devastating effects of fatigue, loss of independence with daily activities and weakness that may occur as the result of chemotherapy or radiation. We have open communication with the physicians and nurses at the Cancer Center at Lehigh Valley Hospital and offer a customized approach to recovery that focuses on all of your needs.

Fatigue management and weakness

While it may seem contradictory, exercise is a preferred treatment for fatigue related to cancer treatment. A complete program consists of energy conservation strategies and a gentle exercise program that brings oxygen to your muscles to make you stronger.

Balance disturbances

Losing weight and changes in sensation are a few of the side effects from cancer treatment. These changes may lead to alterations in your balance which can lead to an increased risk of falling. Our therapists can help you improve your balance to prevent injuries or provide assistive devices to increase your safety.

Pain or muscle tightness

Sometimes radiation may cause your skin or muscles to tighten. With relaxation techniques, stretches and massage, we can help alleviate that pain.

Swelling in the arms or legs (lymphedema)

Lymphedema is a side effect of cancer treatment that may occur long after your cancer treatment has ended. Our certified lymphedema therapists are available at any point in your recovery to help you with swelling and decreased range of motion. Treatment consists of manual fluid drainage, compression garments, exercise and skin/hygiene care.

These services are available with a prescription from your doctor and may be covered by insurance.
